The most common ingredients in laundry detergents are phosphorus, enzymes, ammonia, naphthalene, phenol, sodium nitilotriacetate along with numerous other chemicals.
Often, detergents containers don’t even list the ingredients in laundry detergents. The problem with detergents ingredients and these kinds of petrochemicals is – they can cause rashes, itches, allergies, sinus problems and other health problems.
The residue left on your clothing, bed sheets, towels and other fabrics that you touch is absorbed through your skin. These petroleum-based chemicals really do penetrate the skin and enter the body!
BLEACH is a strong corrosive. It will irritate or burn the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. It may cause pulmonary edema or vomiting and coma if ingested.
Never mix bleach with acid toilet bowl cleaners or ammonia. These mixtures may produce fumes which not only are toxic, they can be DEADLY!
How do laundry detergents work?
Soiled clothing has two kinds of soils – water-soluble and non-water-soluble. Dirt and mud are examples of water-soluble soils. Examples of non-water-soluble soils are underarm stains, “ring around the collar”, food oils, car oil and grease and so on.
Water plus a detergent “surfactant” can remove both water-soluble and non-water-soluble soils. The action of water plus the detergent surfactants loosen both kinds of soils and disperse them into the water.
Good laundry detergents should also act to keep the removed soils suspended in the wash water so they do not become redeposited back onto the cleaned fabrics.
Otherwise, a “graying” of the clothing or fabric happens over time with repeated washings.
Increasingly, savvy and health-conscious consumers are opting for natural laundry detergents and home cleaners.
Doing so helps reduce one’s exposure to the harsh chemicals as well as being much more environmentally friendly.
