Because your health is important!
Regular commercial home fragrance products contain industrial chemicals that have serious known health consequences.
For example, the pesticide methoxychlor is used in air freshners to interfere with your ability to smell by coating nasal passages with an oil film. This pesticide is known to accumulate in fat cells.
Another chemical found in a typical home fragrance air freshener is formaldehyde (yes – the embalming agent), which is a highly toxic, known carcinogen.
And a third toxic chemical normally found in a home fragrance spray is phenol.
When this chemical touches your skin, it can cause swelling, burning, peeling, and breaking out in hives. Breathing in phenol is certainly NOT healthy for our delicate lung cells.
What to do? Educate yourself and look for safer natural fragrance products for the home.
Chemicals called solvents are very often found in glues, nail polish, cleaning products, finishes, carpet and even some mattresses. Solvents enter the body very easily through the skin and they tend to accumulate in lipid-rich tissues like the brain, the myelin and fat (adipose).
When doing laundry or using other home products like air fresheners, household sprays, detergents and soaps – try not to use products produced from petrochemicals.
According to Dr. John R. Lee, long term exposure to solvents can cause mood disturbances such as depression, irritability, fatigue, anxiety, inability to focus and short-term memory loss.
If you are pregnant, be very careful with solvents – they can cause damage to the fetus (avoid nail polish and polish remover).
When you are pregnant or have an infant, it is not such a good idea to move into a newly built home, to remodel or paint the house or the baby room. Do this later when you can take your baby away from the chemicals that will be released into the air to breathe.
Most household cleaners and chemicals are petrochemical-based. The majority of these substances have an estrogen-like effect in the body.
When estrogen levels rise in the body, you experience weight gain, water retention, brain cell excitability and sometimes even panic reactions. Read more about estrogen dominance and the symptoms.
