Fibroids are mostly known as muscle tumors or benign tumors, they are round and in most cases non-cancerous.
They are a very common growth of the female genital tract and they seem to appear in women ages 30 to 50.
Fibroids are also called myoma, leiomyoma or fibroma of the uterus and they grow under the influence of estrogen, because estrogen promotes cell growth. When you are estrogen dominant, this means that you have low levels of progesterone – which contributes to the growth of fibromyomas.
Uterine fibroids are usually non-cancerous tumors and can develop on or near the outer walls of the uterus, inside of the uterine cavity and within the actual uterine wall.
Some doctors frequently recommend myomas as the reason why a woman should have a hysterectomy.
If your doctor does not consider or discuss several tecniques for removing uterine fibroid tumors without removing the uterus, consider finding a second opinion.
The true cause of fibromyomas remains unknown. But there are several factors that seem to affect their growth in most women.
• 1- Compounds called xenoestrogens, have an estrogen-like molecular structure that creates unhealthy effects and illnesses in our bodies.
Xenoestrogens include the growth hormones that are common in milk, beef and chicken, most pesticides and all plastics used for food storage and preparation.
• 2- A second factor is genetics. There are clearly patterns of leiomyomas that run in families and medical science can’t yet explain why.
• 3- Stress, difficult or abusive relationships, stressful profession or job, etc…are all important factors is the role of hormone imbalance.
Most women know that fibroid growth or symptoms are very much affected by their emotional lives and elevated stress levels.
• 4- Changes in a woman’s hormone levels. The more estrogen that uterine fibroid tumors are exposed to, the faster they grow.
• 5- Overweight and poor diet are major factors, since toxins are frequently stored in fatty tissues.
• 6- At menopause, myomas stop growing and in most cases will disappear, because the production of estrogen in the ovaries goes down to 40 to 60 percent.
• 7- Diets deficient in fiber-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, intake of highly sugared drinks and sodas and intake of highly processed food (fast food).
Some women with leiomyomas have no symptoms and they are not aware that they have uterine fibroids. Other women have a list of additional complaints and symptoms.
Some of these symptoms are:
• Considerable abdominal pain and bloating
• Bladder inflammation and irritation, urge to urinate frequently,
• Inability to digest,
• Bleeding, (sometimes bleeding between periods) and heavy menstrual periods
• Pain when having sex,
• Depression, very anxious and irritable
• Infertility and pregnancy complications – to name a few.
And tumor growths are one of the most common reasons why women in their 30’s or 40’s have hysterectomies. Women with myomas sometimes have periods that last 8 days or longer.
Fibroid growths afflict close to 80% of American women. Again, the majority of women affected this way will be in their 30’s to 50’s, and 1 in 4 will have complaints serious enough to seek medical treatment!
Importantly, only about 1% of fibroids or leiomyosarcoma are malignant. Many doctors advise that hysterectomies should be performed only in the event of malignancy. That means there are far too many hysterectomies. If you have decided to have a hysterectomy, read more about pre-operative care and hysterectomy recovery here.
Fibroids are round, firm, usually benign lumps of tissue that grow from the muscle layer of the uterus. Frequently, these fibroids grow in groups, and they can be as small as a pea, or as big as an egg or a grapefruit.
Women who also have menstrual abnormalities, heavier periods, PMS, irregular periods and painful periods seem to be more likely to get tumors or lumps.
Again, many menstrual irregularities are associated with hormone imbalance.
Natural progesterone is the best way to keep these fibroids from growing in size, and they can be kept from growing until menopause.
Remember that in this case, estrogen promotes cell growth and progesterone stops it.
Many times, the application of progesterone will cause the fibroids to either shrink in size or disappear altogether! Perhaps you’ll think, “Do they mean that hysterectomies are unnecessary?”
One doctor has gone so far in his book as to say that 90% of all hysterectomies are medically unnecessary! And Dr. West is the Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City!
